The small community of Castelbello-Ciardes/Kastelbell-Tschars on the old Roman trade route
Via Claudia Augusta boasts some of the most beautiful sights in South Tyrol, including four castles and various estates and historic farmsteads, all showing the former status of this village on the Adige River.
The symbol of the village is the
Kastelbell Castle. This medieval castle was built on a cliff high above the Adige River. Today, the fortified castle with its Schwalbenzinnen (swallow battlements) is a gallery and cultural center of Castelbello.
The summer residence of the popular mountaineer Reinhold Messner, the medieval
Juval Castle, is also well worth visiting. It is situated high above the valley on the Monte Sole mountain and is the main base of the Messner Mountain Museum.
