The subterranean
Messner Mountain Museum in Solda,
at the foot of the Ortles Mountain, devotes its expansive 300 m2 area
to the theme of glaciers and ice. Visitors use ramps to access the
man-made cave under the glacier, referred to on old maps as the “End of
the World”. Dreamt up by Reinhold Messner, the exhibition uses visual
art and historical memorabilia to shed light on a white Alpine world,
from the legendary abominable snowmen to the ski slopes. The museum also
houses the world’s largest collection of Ortles photographs.
