Alpine Pastures and Mountain Shelters around Prato allo Stelvio
Alpine Pastures and Mountain Shelters around the Stelvio Pass
There are seemingly infinite hiking possibilities around Prato allo Stelvio: strolling through the larch and stone-pine forests, trekking up to the mountain shelters and crossing the green, open pastures. There are spectacular views of the Ortler from the Seristori and Tabaretta huts, while on the Prato high mountain pasture visitors can observe the traditional local methods of cheese production at first-hand.
On the way up to the Stelvio pasture, one can with a bit of luck encounter deer in the Fragges Nature Reserve and from the Sesvennas and Oberettes shelters, one can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding mountains across the upper Val Venosta.
Today, many of South Tyrol's Alpine refuges are managed and offer refreshments on their sun terraces. The food in the huts has become lighter and more genuine over the last 10 years, and original Venosta Valley recipes have been rediscovered, enriching the menus. Many pastures produce high-quality milk products, such as the internationally renowned "Vinschger Almkaese" cheese variety.
