The history of Upper Venosta Valley gives an insight into the conflicts
between the Habsburg rulers and the people of Grisons. Thus, today we
can admire impressive historic monuments,
over 40 castles and palaces. Some are in ruins and only the vestiges of buildings remain, many however, were preserved from decay.
Of the best-preserved castles in South Tyrol is
Churburg Castle above Sluderno/Schluderns.
Erected in the 13th century, the medieval buildings were later
converted into a Renaissance residence. One can see frescoes, chambers
and chapels, as well as Europe's largest armour collection. It is also
worth visiting the
Lichtenberg ruin and
Rotund Castle in Tubre/Taufers, as well as
Fürstenburg Castle and the
Fröhlich tower, as one of the five towers in
Malles/Mals.
