"Fischerwaal" irrigation channel path

Path no. 2,6

General description

Fischerwaal in Stelvio National Park is a pleasantly shaded trail. Discover an original Waalschelle resonating across the land and enjoy scenic views of the Untervinschgau and Obervinschgau region.

The "Waalschelle," which is attached to a larch tree above the irrigation canal, can be heard from afar.

Refreshment stop: In the inns in Tschengls
Water flow: May-October, only if irrigation is required

Route description
The Tschengls parish church marks the start of this loop trail. A narrow road works its way up towards Tschenglsburg castle and Türkhof. Follow the forest road to the left to “Kohlstattl” until the entry point of Fischerwaal. Continue on trail #6 back to Türkhof and descend towards the starting point. A 15-minute hike on Bergerweg will take you from Türkhof to the ruins of Tschenglsberg castle, which can be viewed from the outside.

Tschengelsberg Castle was probably built in the 12th century by the eponymous knightly family as their ancestral seat. In the 14th century, it lost its significance due to its remote location and was thereafter used only as a mountain fortress in case of defense. It was replaced by Tschenglsburg, a comfortable, fortified residence. From then on, Tschengelsberg Castle was also called Hinterburg. The castle's construction site was strategically well chosen.
